'Medical science overpromises but underdelivers' How far do you agree with this statement

Over the last century, medical science has progressively advanced human health more than most other time frames.  It has given mankind longer lasting health and a better quality of life across the globe. Illnesses and diseases that were once considered fatal hardly pose a threat today.  People are living longer lives than ever before and there is little that medicine cannot successfully treat today.  As medical science continues to astonish us even more with its miraculous abilities, there is the growing concern that medical science has taken on more than it can comfortably handle.  I agree that medical science overpromises and underdelivers.

Key Points:

  • Human Genome Project was originally believed to help create revolutionary new ways to diagnose and treat illnesses that affected humans with early detection.
  • It was believed to be the answer to problems such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.
  • It would bring the greater hope of patients making a more thorough and long lasting recovery
  • Yet HGP has not brought about the results it has claimed
  • The cures to Alzheimer's and Parkinson's are not close yet.
  • Manipulating genes has serious  side effects.

  • Other points to include could be cancer drugs which promise a cure but which are only temporary at best.
  • They are also staggeringly expensive.
  • Scientists thought they would be able to isolate cancer causing cells but this has proved far from easy as these cells are notoriously hard to pin down and control

  • Ethical codes have not been truly upheld or fulfilled in medical science
  • Numerous profit-centred fertility clinics are openly purchasing human eggs and sperm
  • Morals and ethics are breached as humans are divided into separate camps of elite and ordinary humans

Reasons Against Cloning A Level Short Notes

  • Reproductive cloning would diminish the sense of  uniqueness of an individual. It would violate deeply and widely held convictions concerning human individuality and freedom which could lead to a devaluation of clones in comparison with non-clones
  • Reproductive cloning is inherently unsafe. At least 95% of mammalian cloning experiments have resulted in failures in terms of miscarriages, still births and life-threatening deformalities
  • Those who are against human cloning believe that there is no proof that by cloning someone who is as intelligent as Albert Einstein guarantees that the clone will turn out exactly the same as Albert Einstein. Under the wrong circumstances and upbringing he could grow up to be self-serving and corrupt.
  • From a religious viewpoint there is the belief that only god has the power to give, take or create life. It is not up to the human race to decide such an issue.

Why Phonics?

Research shows that when phonics is taught in a structured way- starting with the easiest sounds and progressing through to the most complex - it is the most effective way of teaching young children to read. It is particularly helpful for children aged between 5-7 years of age.

Almost all children who receive good teaching on phonics will learn the skills they need to tackle new words. They can then go on to read any kind of text fluently and confidently as well as read for enjoyment. Children will dyslexia will also find phonics helpful.

WE INCLUDE PHONICS AS A VITAL PART OF OUR P1 PREP PROGRAM AT BASIC LEVEL.

Parents Feedback On Phonics

Here are some real-life situations parents in Singapore have found themselves in.

Q: My child does not read at all when we are not home to supervise. My domestic helper finds it impossible to control him as well.

A: While it is often difficult to exert proper control over a child's learning needs, parents or their helpers can make this job that much more palatable by letting the child sit down for a mere 15 minutes a day. Here's how:
Flip through a phonics book and have the child read from it
Do not insist that he gets it right immediately. With practice the child will improve.
Give him two fun exercises on phonics. Let it contain activities which include colouring or circling the correct answers so that it is interesting for the child.
Do this daily for a month till the child is more accustomed and receptive to reading before increasing the duration.
Remember that it is far more beneficial to have the child sit down to short but regular lessons where he will benefit rather than long sessions which may bore him and stifle his interest in reading altogether.

A Level Short Notes Reasons For Cloning

  • With human cloning the days of silicone implants and other procedures that can cause cancer may soon be over. With the new technology, instead of using materials foreign to the body for such procedures, doctors will be able to manufacture bone, fat, cartilage and connective tissue that matches the patient exactly. Anyone will be able to have their appearance altered to their satisfaction.
  • The average person carries eight defective genes inside them. These defective genes allow people to become sick when they would be otherwise healthy. With human cloning it may be possible to ensure that we no longer suffer because of our defective genes.

Reasons for Cloning A Level Short Notes

REASONS FOR HUMAN CLONING

  1. Human cloning technology could be used to reverse heart attacks. Scientists believe that they may be able to treat heart attack victims by cloning their heart cells and injecting them into the areas of the heart that have been damaged. Heart disease is the number one killer in the United States and other industrialised nations.
  2. With cloning, infertile couples could have children. Despite getting a fair amount of publicity in the news, current treatments for infertility are not very successful. Couples go through   physically and emotionally painful procedures for a small chance of having children. Many couples run out of money and time without successfully having children.

Our P6 Compo. An Uncomfortable Experience

Party time!' Sarah shouted. Lily was a mutual friend of Sarah and me. It was the June holidays and I had accompanied Lily to go to Sarah's birthday party. We had just finished blowing out the candles on the cake and were enjoying ourselves dancing along to the loud rock music.

Everyone at the party was helping themselves to the appetising food prepared by Sarah"s mother, Mrs Tan.  Shortly after, we sang a hearty and cheerful Birthday song for Sarah while clapping enthusiastically as Sarah beamed with utmost joy. All around me, people were tucking into generous slices of delicious birthday cake. As I walked across the table with the brightly coloured cake, greedy and stubborn me took a slice even though I had been specifically reminded by my mother to avoid anything that had nuts in it. I simply could not refuse it.

A short while passed and nothing seemed to be happening. Suddenly, I began scratching like a mad monkey and rashes appeared everywhere on my body. Everyone around me that saw it looked at me with a disgusted look.

"What happened?' 'Are you alright?' Lily asked worriedly. I stopped scratching and told her that it was most probably because I had eaten something that contained nuts. Sarah immediately shouted out to her parents that I had accidentally eaten nuts and was having an allergic reaction. When Mr and Mrs Tan heard about my rashes they immediately came running out of the kitchen to see if the rashes were bad. Luckily Mrs Tan used to be a nurse and knew exactly what to do. After attending to me, she called my parents to inform them about what had happened......

Our Student's Essays Sec 3. Sec 5

Excerpts from our students' writings

'Online gambling should be banned from teenagers' What are your views

In our modern society today, there is a multitude of games that are available to the public. These include the more traditional board games which have stood the test of time as well as numerous online games. A large variety of these online games include gambling whereby large sums of money stand to be gained or lost in a single session. I strongly agree that online gambling should be banned from teenagers .. .

'Integrity'

.....My sharp eyes glanced through the spacious hall. I spotted a calculator underneath a dusty vandalised table. My heart glowed. I hastened my footsteps, took the calculator and stealthily put it in my stationery box. However, this had May's name written on it. She was my best friend.

The deafening sound of the school bell rang leading us to our doom or our glory. It was time for me to start my paper.  Fifteen minutes of my examination time had passed. I was struggling with the paper as my hands began to perspire heavily. I lifted my heavy head up to relieve myself from the unbearable struggle. I looked at May from the corner of my eyes. She was weeping despairingly. Guilt started to envelope me....

Tips to Master Phonics

Many of you out there are already beginning preparations for Kindergarten next year.
No doubt you would certainly wish to ensure that your child is well-prepared and nothing says 'well prepared' as much as having mastered the art of reading.

Phonics will help your child get there. However - how does one actually go about helping to ensure that your child can actually read.  In Singapore today, most children spend their mornings  at one education institution or another.  English, Maths and Chinese are already incorporated as part of the menu. Still you feel that your child could be doing better.

What else then can you do to ensure that your child  unleashes his potential to the max. Simple steps you could take include the following:

  • Remember to Review.
  • The process of  review should be conducted on a daily basis if possible.
  • Set aside a mere 15 minutes a day and get your child to read through all the alphabets he has learnt so far
  • Make it a simple and lighthearted affair.
  • Do not insist that he gets it right or flawless the first time
  • The trick is to make him repeat this simple exercise on a daily basis so that he becomes familiar with the  alphabet and knows it well in time
  • It is far better to sit down for brief but regular moments rather than long drawn sessions which may bore the child.

OUR P5 COMPOS

A Visit To An Elderly Home

One warm and sunny morning, Mrs Tan announced to the entire class that they would be going for a trip to the home for the Elderly. They were extremely excited and curious at the same time as they had never been to an Elderly Home before. Mrs Tan went on to explain what was expected of them.

The next afternoon the students gathered at the foyer and eagerly awaited the arrival of the school bus which was to bring them to the Elderly home. They were laughing and chatting loudly and happily among themselves. They had decided to put up a song and dance routine for the elderly at the home. The honking of the bus interrupted their chatter as they clamoured up the bus.

Upon reaching their destination, the class ran towards the Elderly Home. Mrs Tan called out to them to slow down but they hardly noticed. The Elderly home was bright and cheery looking. Trees and a well-landscaped little garden made it look extremely pleasant. The pleasant and kindly old folks were seated  neat rows awaiting the song and dance routine. The class hurriedly changed out backstage.

Very soon the stage was awash in a sea of bright colours as the class began to move to their well-choreographed steps and the sweet sounds of singing echoed through the hall.  Grateful applause resounded followed by a light tea with tasty snacks. The students took the time to communicate with the elderly folk there................

OUR A LEVEL TESTIMONIAL

Before I started taking lessons for GP, answering GP questions was really a hit & miss. I had no idea how to interpret questions and pick out keywords thus frequently getting them wrong. Attending the GP lessons really allowed me to grasp the gist of answering the questions through understanding  the question requirements and deducing the  best structure to present the answer.

The lessons were never dull and there were always lively discussions which encouraged me to think deeper and thus learning  more. Ms Cheryl is very approachable and is very willing to go the extra mile to explain the approach to answering questions in a step-by-step manner.

Our A Level Testimonial for GP

I only met Ms Cheryl after my Mid Year exams (MYE) on the second year of my JC life. My aim was to obtain a B grade in General Paper but the grade I obtained for my MYE was an S which was five grades away from my target.  It is usual for students to get two or three grades higher for their A levels compared to their prelims.

However I believed that i was able to do better than that. The one reason is because I was able to witness the amount of effort and hope Ms Cheryl had placed on me despite all the negative outcomes we were facing such as my poor prelim results and the shortage of time that we had.

In the end I was overjoyed when I discovered that I had hit my target for this subject.
